Once upon a time, I was a 19 year old girl from the city. Growing up, I could never have predicted or imagined myself living on a cattle ranch in the middle of Montana. But that’s exactly where I was, happily married to a young cowboy, setting up house and starting a family in those breath-taking, wide open spaces.
Several decades later, I’ve again found myself in unfamiliar territory. Unexpected changes took place…I’ve come full circle and am back…living in that same city I
terrorized graced with my presence during my youth.
In short, city girl went country….32 years later….country girl is…well…STILL a country girl. When they said you can take the girl out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the girl, they weren’t kidding! I will always be country, no matter where I call home.
Are Ya Still With Me? Here’s more…
Those 32 years in Montana were incredibly fulfilling and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them! More importantly, I wouldn’t have been blessed with my 5 wonderful babies who got to grow up on our cattle ranch. All 5 are now married…having babies of their own. Each one of them is now either ranching or living/working in the surrounding rural community.
In 2008 I started a little blog…Real Country Living. Every day on the ranch brought experiences I couldn’t wait to share on that website, with both country and city folks…or anyone in between. I continue blogging on that site and plan to keep it alive and well! After all, it’s a pretty cool scrapbook for my family to look back on! From day one, the tagline for RCL has been: “Experience country living, no matter where you call home”. Well, now I find myself in the position of validating that statement…from my new home in the city.
Residing in a Twin Cities suburb in Minnesota has been a rather difficult transition for me, but one I am just as determined to overcome as I was as that naive city girl in the middle of Montana. Something that helps me keep going is that my country soul still gets to sing, even here…I just can’t keep it quiet!
I’m still the same person who loves old, chippy, painted furniture…one who craves home-cooked comfort food and savors the smell of garden dirt…and a million other things that look and feel like country to me. And when I get to visit my children and their growing families in Montana, I am still privileged to be part of their rural lifestyle, which I will always miss and love.
This new adventure has truly become a real-life chance to infuse my urban surroundings with country elements, just as I virtually encouraged RCL website visitors to do all these years. Yes, I’m having to prove that old tagline…and I’m happy to say that it really is possible!
I’ve got an enthusiastic…and good looking, I might add…partner with me on this journey…my handsome, Blue Eyes. He is another unexpected blessing…supporting my crazy country whims and embracing the transformation of his (now our) home into what makes us both happy to be in and share with others.
I won’t be done until anyone who sets foot in our front door feels like they could be visiting their closest neighbor who is only a mere 10 miles away…down a dirt road…out in the middle of nowhere 🙂
Thus, Blue Onion Bliss is born…an extension of Real Country Living…it’s little sister. I won’t ever lose my love of country and there’s plenty of it to share! And so, I shall….
Please feel free to leave me a comment below! I love to hear from you. Tell me about yourself, what you’d like to see on this blog, share your favorite “country” elements…anything you would like!
